Digital Television is already here Anyone who subscribes to Sky is using digital People with Freeview set top boxes or still using old OnDigital or ITV Digital boxes have ‘gone digital’ Cable subscribers more and more are receiving digital only services
Most of these viewers still receive analogue (normal TV) along with the digital services. This is where problems may arise at switchover because this analogue reception is used by most current video recorders, being able to watch one channel while recording another for example
At switchover the analogue will disappear and digital only will become ‘normal TV’
Currently you can buy digital set top boxes to connect to your existing TV Televisions with digital built in - dual standard analogue and digital combined Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) which record to a hard disk Freeview set top box with twin tuner and built in PVR which works in the same way as a Sky + box - they both will record one channel while you watch another and let you pause live TV and even back track live TV if you missed something
The future is bright because all kinds of useful features can be built in to equipment with digital
Interactive services, programme information (Sky’s electronic programme guide is an excellent example) More interesting and better presented ‘teletext’ Clear subtitles that keep up with the script Even more channels - allowing (hopefully) more diverse programming - although some will be subscription - which is another good reason to keep paying the TV Licence because in my opinion a lot of channels hit you twice, subscribe to watch ten minute ad breaks (that’s enough of that - Ed)
HD - High Definition TV will become popular and more readily available and cheaper There is a lot more to come that’s for sure
