Digital switchover has started in the UK. Between 2008 and 2013 the digital TV switchover will take place, region by region. After switchover, you will need a digital box or digital TV to watch television. Main transmitters and their associated relays turn off analogue and change to digital only.
The Whitehaven area of Cumbria has already switched off the analogue and switched over to digital between October and November in 2007. No major problems have been reported and there are advantages, extra channels, no ghosting, Interactive services and the digital system uses less power
As a guide people who can receive from the main transmitter will receive the full range of digital channels, people who receive from relays will have a reduced number of channels but all the BBC/ITV/Ch4/5 channels will be there. High Definition channels will also become available. But you will need a digital receiver such as a TV with digital tuner or a separate box for example a Freeview box which can be obtained at a very reasonable price.
The next area to change to digital will be the Border region starting with the Selkirk transmitter during November 2008. Caldbeck and Douglas will switch between April and June 2009. The Kendal transmitter will switchover at the same time - April and June 2009.
Granada TV region is expected to switchover between October and December 2009 (Winter Hill transmitter and associated relays)
